Increasing Milk For Breast Pumping

Milk supply is essential to breastfeeding and pumping. And at times it can become a challenge. Here are a few tips for maintaining and increasing milk supply.

  1. Eat and drink well.
Raw foods go a long way in keeping your milk flowing and healthy. Vitamins from fruits and vegetables are absorbed and distributed through the body five times more effectively than any supplemental form. Avoid preservatives and diet supplements as well. Drink plenty of water - 8 cups per day, minimum.
  2. Exercise.
We know the challenge of finding time for taking care of your body. But, taking care of yourself first goes a long way in helping you take better care of other things in your life. Even if it's just 15 minutes a day to do a low-cardio routine. As Nike says, "Just do it."
  3. Feed and pump as often as you can.
Frequency is key in maintaining and increasing milk supply. The female body is hardwired to reproduce milk as soon as it senses 'inventory' is low. Breast milk should not be kept at room temperature for more than 4 hours. Keep in the back of the fridge for no more than four days and it can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Breast pumping requires a bit of sacrifice, but the rewards are more than worth it. Stay healthy and live well.
